“But I can still drive cars and travel the world and have a lot of fun, so no, nothing to complain about.”
Verstappen said his concern was that the new cars were moving away from what is traditionally expected of a Formula One driver.
Verstappen added: “All good drivers will be able to adapt to it. That’s not the problem, but the whole way of racing is changing, I would say less pure.”
“I just want to drive normally, as it should be, without having to [think] “Oh, if you brake longer or shorter or longer, or go up or down one gear, you know, things like that, it’s going to dramatically impact straight-line performance.”
The all-electric Formula E series has become known for its aggressive power management to ensure cars reach the end of races without running out of charge.
F1 is not in the same position. Instead of exhausting a single amount of charge from maximum to discharge from the start of the race to the finish as in Formula E, batteries in Formula 1 will go from fully charged to a very low level and then back again several times per lap.
But Verstappen’s view is that the lack of power to get going consistently all the time takes the sport away from the traditional form of driving.
