Three-time Olympic gold medalist Max Whitlock has come out of retirement to target a place in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The 32-year-old, the most successful British gymnast in history, had initially announced that the 2024 Paris Games would be his last.
However, Whitlock says his career felt “incomplete” after missing out on a podium place in the French capital.
“I’m back,” he said on The One Show. “It’s an incredible feeling. I’m officially back, I’m a gymnast again, and it’s a crazy feeling.”
“Something has been constantly bothering me, it has been like that for the past year, it just doesn’t feel right, it feels incomplete and incomplete.
“I feel like I have an opportunity in front of me, and I’m not going to get it again. So I’m going to come back, do a three-year stint, and I want to be able to get to my fifth Olympics.”
“I know it’s a dangerous game, but I want to finish it on a high, I want to rewrite the end of my career.
“I’d rather take the risk of taking this opportunity, than not take the risk, because I think this is something that will fast forward in 10 or 15 years, and I’ll look back and think that’s something I regret.
“I really want to push it further than ever before.”
