Meet Noscroll, an AI bot that does scrolling for you

What if you could outsource your doom scrolling? That’s the premise behind new startup Noscroll, which offers an AI-powered bot that can browse your social feeds, news sites, and other online conversations, then send you a text message when something important happens.

“No nourishment. No mind. No anger,” Noscroll’s pitch to users reads. “Just a sign.”

The idea itself is fairly simple – it’s a bot that reads the web for you. But to work, there’s a lot to do under the hood.

Nadav Hollander — who previously served as CTO at NFT marketplace OpenSea after selling his decentralized finance startup to the company in 2022 — said he built Noscroll because he found himself in a love/hate relationship with X. He was taking a sabbatical after leaving his job at OpenSea, and spent a lot of time on the social media platform.

“It’s tremendously entertaining and informative in ways you don’t get from regular media,” Hollander told TechCrunch. “But it’s culturally very toxic, and it’s very disturbing to read about,” he added, comparing it to the nutritional equivalent of fast food. “You just feel terrible after that.”

Hollander said he wanted to exit the app without missing out on news and content. This inspired him to build Noscroll, which was released to the public just two days ago.

To get started with the service, simply text a Noscroll AI agent directly at (415) 583-7721, and they will send you a link to link your X account to the service. This authentication provides Noscroll with information about the likes, bookmarks, accounts, and posts you follow.

The bot uses a variety of off-the-shelf AI models running on the company’s own infrastructure. The models are customized with a lot of stimulation, so the robot has its own unique voice and communication style.

You can chat with an AI agent in natural language, telling it what kind of news or topics you want to follow, as well as what doesn’t interest you. He will then prepare a sample summary.

To work, the AI ​​pulls information from outside of X, including news sites, blogs, Reddit, Hacker News, Substack, and more. It can also draw on things like research papers, local politics, or any other sources you may need. (You can recommend specific sources, too, if there’s something you want to be sure to check out.)

Then, instead of spending your time scrolling through endless social media feeds to stay up to date on the news that matters to you, Noscroll will send you news summaries via text at whatever cadence works best. For example, a casual user might want to receive a weekly update on a topic, while a news junkie might want to send text messages several times a day.

These summaries are essentially a collection of news links plus a brief AI summary of the article. If you want to know more, you can click on the links to open them in your favorite web browser and read the entire article.

You can also respond to the AI ​​bot to ask questions and have conversations about the news you’re reading, too, as you do with other AI-powered chatbots. Or you can add it to a group chat or Telegram group so others can interact with the service. (We’re told other chat apps will be supported later.)

The bot also knows when there’s breaking news worth watching right away and will text you as it’s happening.

Over time, the AI ​​learns what interests you and uses it to better organize the types of information it sends to you, the company claims.

Although the bot currently costs $9.99 per month to use, it will send you a sample news summary for free so you can customize it to your interests and try it for 7 days. You can unsubscribe at any time. Hollander notes that Noscroll may experiment with variable pricing in the future.

While there’s an obvious use case for tech industry workers struggling to keep up with the constant stream of daily AI news and updates, Noscroll isn’t limited to technology topics. You can follow almost anything: reality TV, your favorite band, local news, your friends’ posts, your unread newsletters, or anything else you find interesting.

Hollander has been surprised to see how people are using it outside of technology.

Users try to stay up to date with job listings, track layoffs, and more. Journalists have also taken advantage of the tool to follow things like politics and local events.

“I think the archetype that was interesting is anyone who has a professional need to be online and keep a close eye on things,” he adds. “It’s very helpful to have a deputy who does that kind of work for you no matter what your field is.”

He says the AI ​​bot has seen rapid adoption and has already attracted investor interest. Hollander, who built the bot alongside his friend, an open source developer from the cryptocurrency world who only goes by the username @z0age on X, says the two have yet to decide what to do with the incoming interest just yet.
