💡 **What You’ll Learn**:
Compared to its impressive US opening 10 days earlier, when it finished third in the box office charts and took $7.2m (£5.76m), Melania’s UK debut – No. 29, with £32,974 overall across 155 cinemas with a site average of £212.80 – was modest.
But the documentary fell significantly in its second week of release in the UK, with tracking organization Comscore confirming that it took in £4,091 from 62 venues, meaning the site averaged £65.98 – or around six tickets per venue.
The film’s UK gross now stands at £61,850, an 88% drop since last week. In the United States, the equivalent figure of 67% is also significant, although not so quickly.
Reviews in the UK were particularly scathing, with Zane Brooks of The Guardian calling it “a remake of the gilded rubbish of the area of interest” and “two hours of pure, endless hell”. But the film was met with almost universal critical disdain.
Over the weekend, a Rotten Tomatoes spokesperson defended the unusually wide gap between these reviews and those posted by the public on their site, saying: “There was no manipulation of the public’s reviews of the Melania documentary.”
They added: “The reviews shown on Popcornmeter are verified reviews, which means it has been verified that users have purchased a ticket for the movie through Fandango.”
The streaming date for the Amazon film – for which the company has paid $40m (£29m), plus an additional $35m (£25m) on marketing – is expected to be announced soon.
