McLaren’s Lando Norris took the championship lead for the first time since April with a dominant win at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Norris was beyond the reach of some battles and crashes behind him as he maintained the lead from pole into the first corner and controlled the race from there.
Norris leads the championship by just one point over teammate Oscar Piastri, who came back from seventh on the grid to finish fifth.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who finished third behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, is 36 points behind the lead with four races to go.
The virtual safety car in the final two laps stole the race from the tarmac, with Verstappen just behind Leclerc and Piastri chasing Oliver Biermann’s Haas, preventing overtaking as they both moved into position for the challenge.
However, Pearman’s fourth place finish was just reward for the brilliant driving by British rookie Pirman.
The main stories of the dramatic race were:
-
Norris was absolutely dominant en route to his sixth win of the season, one behind Piastri’s total
-
Great recovery from Verstappen after losing ground following some controversial early manoeuvres
-
Damage limitation from Piastri after a tough qualifier
-
Biermann’s outstanding driving, benefiting from Verstappen’s early aggression in the race
