βœ… Main takeaway:

Lewis Hamilton hailed his best qualifying result for Ferrari for Sunday’s Mexico City Grand Prix as a “huge step” after what he described as “hard work” during the season so far with the team.

The seven-time world champion will start from third after an impressive display from Ferrari, while teammate Charles Leclerc finished second behind Lando Norris, who took pole.

Hamilton has had a difficult time since joining from Mercedes last winter – and is yet to win a race with the team.

He faces a difficult task in changing that statistic this weekend as Norris looks imperious, even though three of the past five races in Mexico have been won from third place.

But Hamilton is happy to see things improving for the team.

“Definitely happy to make progress and finally be there,” he said.

β€œCharles is used to these results, or at least being close to the front most of the year, but for me it was difficult, as I was like sixth, seventh or eighth – mostly eighth.”

“So getting third place is a big step for us and I’m really grateful for the team’s efforts and the amazing support I’ve had from the team,” he added.

This is also the first time this season that two Ferraris have qualified in the top three, and Hamilton added: β€œThese guys have been so fast all year, it’s a great feeling.

He added: “The team really deserves it, so we are working as hard as we can and I am very grateful to everyone on this team to keep pushing and not giving up.”
