In the women’s competition, American Coco Gauff lost the first set, but she recovered to beat Alicia Parks 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 in the third round, while Amanda Anisimova defeated Yulia Starodubtseva 6-4, 6-2, and Victoria Mpoko defeated Anastasia Zakharova 6-1, 7-5.

But former world number one Naomi Osaka said she is trying to balance her tennis schedule with being a mother after her 7-5, 6-4 loss to Australian Talia Gibson in their second-round match.

Japanese Osaka, who returned to the WTA Tour in January 2024 after a 15-month absence before the birth of her daughter in July 2023, said: “I feel like this represents a dilemma for me as well.”

“For me, my daughter is very important, and I want to be a mother. I want to be the best mother I can, but sometimes I feel like I know what I have to do to become a really good player, and that is very difficult.

“Because for me, I want to win titles and I want to be the best player I can be, but if I have to sacrifice spending a lot of time with my daughter, I would rather not do that.”

In the men’s competition, world number two Jannik Sinner easily defeated Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 6-3, while Alexander Zverev defeated wildcard Martin Damm 6-2, 6-4.

Zverev will play in the third round with Marin Cilic, who defeated Brandon Nakashima 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).

Ben Shelton, the favorite at home, did not qualify after suffering a surprise defeat against Alexander Shevchenko, who defeated the world number nine 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
