British second seed Jack Draper exited the Miami Open in the second round with a 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-0) win over Riley Opelka.
The 24-year-old lost two tiebreaks to the big-serving American, who wrapped up the win within 93 minutes.
Draper had headed into the tournament after an impressive run to the quarter-finals in Indian Wells – which saw him beat Novak Djokovic – after nearly eight months out with an arm injury.
However, he struggled against the powerful 6ft 11in Opelka, ranked 67th in the world, who fired 25 aces and 47 winners.
The defeat leaves Draper at risk of falling further in the world rankings ahead of the clay court season after he gave up his place as number one in Britain to Cameron Norrie this week.
Elsewhere, Katie Poulter advanced to the third round in Miami Gardens when Dane Clara Tosson withdrew from the match due to injury.
The third-seeded British player lost her lead 5-3, and Towson won the tiebreaker in the first set 7-4, before recovering and winning the second set 6-4.
Poulter won the first game of the third set only for Towson to decide she could not continue.
“It was a total battle, some bad tennis and bad conditions as well, but you have to find a way,” Poulter said.
“Unfortunately you couldn’t finish the race, but that’s how it is. This is never the way you want to win, but you’re happy to qualify for the next round.”
