Jannik Sinner surpassed Novak Djokovic’s 10-year record for the most consecutive sets won at the ATP Masters 1000, after beating Frenchman Corentin Moutet at the Miami Open.

Sinner, the 24-year-old world number two, scored his 25th and 26th sets respectively at the highest level of tournaments below the Grand Slam in a 71-minute, 6-1, 6-4 win.

Sinner equaled Djokovic’s previous 24-set record of 24 straight sets by defeating Damir Dzumhur in his opening match.

“I’m very happy. This sport is unpredictable, so we’re trying to attract attention as much as possible and we’ll see what comes in the next round,” Sinner said.

Sinner, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has won the last two Masters 1000 tournaments – winning at Indian Wells earlier this month and Paris in November – without dropping a set.

The former world number one dominated Moutet from the start, winning 19 of the first 26 points in the match before winning the first set in 22 minutes.

Sinner then earned the fourth break point to end Moutet’s resistance in the fifth game of the second set, before making his way to victory without any obstacle.

He will meet American Alex Michelsen in the round of 16 as he seeks to continue his bid to become the first man to complete the “Sunshine Double” – winning the Indian Wells and Miami Open back-to-back – since Roger Federer achieved this feat in 2017.
