Michael van Gerwen survived a scare as he came back from 4-2 down to defeat fellow Dutchman Vissel Nyman 6-5 in the first round of the European Championship.

Nyman failed to take seven darts in the 11-dart leg before Van Gerwen finally punished him with a 70-dart finish in the 21-dart match in Germany.

Three-time world champion Van Gerwen recently announced that he would miss the Players Championship Finals in November to focus on his family, after revealing in May that he and his wife, with whom he has two children, were divorcing.

He missed darts in a doubles match as he lost the second leg to Najman to trail 4-2 but his legs of 14 darts brought him level.

Najman, who is ranked 36th in the darts rankings, missed two braces to enter the ninth leg, as Van Gerwen, ranked third in the world, led 5-4.

Van Gerwen failed to take three darts in the second leg, as Najman had 71 points to level the score at 5-5 and set up the decider.

Nyman was unable to convert seven chances to win and Van Gerwen, aiming for a record fifth European Championship title, took advantage to advance.

The European Championship is held between the top 32 players in the European Tour rankings for this season, and is held in Dortmund, with the final match ending on Sunday.
