Millwall were fined £45,000 by the FA for chanting obstructionism in the Crystal Palace match.

Millwall were punished in October 2023 after abusing “explicit or implied references to religion” towards James McClean while he was playing for Wigan.

They were then fined £15,000 in June last year for homophobic chants targeting Crystal Palace left-back Ben Chilwell during an FA Cup match in March 2025.

Both times they had an imposed action plan with the aim of ensuring the incidents would not happen again and to make the club more inclusive.

The written reasons provided by the FA acknowledged that Millwall’s previous disciplinary record was “very poor and of serious concern”.

The club described the match with Premier League rivals Millwall in south London as “high risk”, but the committee found that not all steps were taken on the day to comply with their action plan.

Chanting in the 11th minute of the match at Selhurst Park was described as “major” although no fans were identified as being involved and they have since been punished.

The English Football Association called for the stadium to be partially or completely closed due to the violation of the rules for the third time.

It said anything less “would fail to adequately address the seriousness of the club’s repeated breaches of FA Rule E21 or act as a sufficient deterrent in relation to discriminatory behavior by fans and spectators”.

However, the committee acknowledged that Millwall had taken steps to deliver on its action plan.

“We consider that the current action plan has been largely successful, and that the reason for seeking to eliminate discriminatory chants, as far as possible, is better served by improving them and extending their duration than to,” the committee said.
