In Aspinall’s absence, his British compatriot Paddy Pimblett steals the British spotlight in mixed martial arts when he faces American Gaethje in the UFC 324 tournament on January 24.

The interim bout was made because champion Ilya Topuria will not be fighting while he works through issues in his personal life.

Last week, Topuria issued a statement, external He reveals he is facing allegations of domestic violence from his ex-wife – claims the Georgian Spaniard says are untrue.

Since Pimblett has yet to record a win over any of the current top 10 in the UFC lightweight rankings, some have suggested he has been “handpicked” for the title shot.

However, the broader picture gives more insight into why Pimblett was chosen over other viable contenders, with a large part of the reasons being his entertainment value.

If Topuria returns, it could lead to an interesting showdown with Pimblett for the undisputed title, should he defeat Gaethje.

The pair have a history after clashing in a hotel ahead of UFC London in 2022, where Pimblett was filmed throwing a bottle of hand sanitiser at Topuria.

Pimblett has conquered doubters almost every time he’s stepped into the octagon, so don’t be surprised if he has a few more tricks up his sleeve for 2026.
