The Toronto Blue Jays tied the best-of-seven World Series at 2-2 with a 6-2 rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 4.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s early two-run homer and a run galore in the seventh inning helped the only Canadian team in Major League Baseball come from behind at Dodger Stadium.
It also ensures the series returns to Toronto for a sixth, and possibly seventh, decisive game.
After Monday’s 18-inning epic sapped the bullpen energy for both teams, the Dodgers and Blue Jays were counting on long outings from their starting pitchers to give their relief corps some relief.
All eyes were on the Dodgers’ Japanese star Shohei Ohtani, as this was the game in which he was scheduled to double as the starting pitcher and leadoff hitter.
Ohtani, 31, is an extremely rare “two-way” player, operating at an elite level as a pitcher and hitter.
But after reaching base in all nine of his starts in Game 3, he didn’t hit a bat, leaving the pitcher’s mound in the seventh inning down 2-1 and putting two men on base — both of whom would score — with no outs.
Toronto’s lesser-known, California-born player, Shane Bieber, showed no favors for the home side, striking out Ohtani twice and getting into the sixth inning while giving up just one run.
The Dodgers had taken the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Enrique Hernandez’s sacrifice fly scored Max Muncy.
Toronto’s offense was missing George Springer, who suffered a muscle injury during Game 3, but Guerrero stepped up and fired Ohtani over left center field to make it 2-1.
After Ohtani was taken out, Andres Jimenez, Ty France, Bo Bichette, and Addison Barger all drove in runs to give the Blue Jays breathing room at 6-1 heading into the seventh inning stretch.
The Dodgers briefly threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the ninth as Teoscar Hernandez walked, Muncy doubled, and Tommy Edman came out to score Hernandez, but Toronto closed out the win with little warning.
The series continues with Game 5 again at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday night.
