But are fans booing their team and their manager more than ever? Wayne Rooney, who made headlines in 2010 after he attacked England fans for booing the team, remembers being booed a lot in his career. He believes the use of camera phones and social media has made it more visible in the modern game. While his former England teammate, Joe Hart, describes the act of booing as a “pantomime”. Stephen Smith – Head of Sport and Exercise Psychology at the British Psychological Society – explains the science behind booing Ade Adedoyin and why it’s part of our DNA. It is also believed that the relationship between players and fans has changed following the increased commercialization of the sport.
