Motherwell: Talk about the title being ‘irrelevant’ for Berthel Askew’s jeans

Since the Scottish Premiership was founded in 1998, no team has been able to come back within 10 points of winning the title this late in the season.

The biggest comeback in the last 28 years was when Celtic pulled a seven-point deficit over Rangers with seven games remaining in the 2007-08 season.

Therefore, reversing the deficit by ten points would be unprecedented in the modern era. Especially with Motherwell chasing three teams.

So, while Hearts, Rangers and Celtic will take points off each other, Motherwell will have to be close to perfect over their final 11 games to win the league.

They have taken just 12 points from the 33 available against the current top six, and although they have eliminated the errors that cost them – arguably deserved – wins over Hearts, Celtic and Falkirk earlier in the season, they will have to improve on that record significantly.

So far there have been a lot of draws.

After matches against Dundee United and Dundee, they play the top half teams until the split – Celtic, Hibernian, Falkirk and Hearts – and then do so again after that.

It’s a difficult journey. Askew, the calm and confident Dane, never showed even a glimmer of drifting away regardless.

While fans can enjoy the ride without any stress.

“We try not to be too bothered about how people talk about us,” Askew said.

“Because the danger is that if this is something that is very important to you, in a business that is very open and public, you risk having those feelings drift back and forth.

“It won’t help you perform. There’s a lot of positivity and optimism around us, and we share that positivity and optimism about where we are and what we can achieve.

“Not much has been said about us specifically, but we are more confident every game.

“What is important is that we are evolving and growing as a club. We realize where we need to grow as a club – there are a lot of things we need to improve and raise to be able to answer that question.” [about a title challenge] “Yes.”
