Mustafizur Rahman: Indian Premier League team Kolkata Knight Riders releases player after BCCI request

Indian Premier League team Kolkata Knight Riders has released Bangladesh bowler Mustafizur Rahman after being instructed to do so by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

No reason was given for the BCCI’s request, but it comes amid tense tensions between India and neighboring Bangladesh.

Last month, a Hindu man was accused of blasphemy and beaten to death by a mob in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, in an incident that led to protests by Hindu nationalist groups in India.

Anti-India sentiment has increased in Bangladesh since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to the country in 2024.

India did not agree to return it despite numerous requests, while violent protests broke out over the killing of Sharif Usman Hadi, a prominent student leader, in Bangladesh.

“In view of the recent developments happening around the world, the BCCI has instructed Kolkata Knight Riders to release one of their players, Mustafizur Rahman from Bangladesh, from their team,” BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said.

“They can request a substitute if necessary. Upon request, BCCI will allow a substitute player.”
