In 1997, she released her debut album Left of the Middle, which gave her the international hit single Torn. She released her seventh studio album, Algorithm, on September 4. She lives in Oxfordshire with her son.

What is your biggest fear?
As canned Italian spaghetti. When I was a child, it was once served to me at someone’s house. It was very scary.

Who is the living person you most admire, and why?
Alanis Morissette because, in my previous career, she was a huge influence on me and had a feisty spirit that you don’t see very often in women in this industry. She has also been very vocal about mental health issues.

What is the trait you hate most about yourself?
Being late.

What is the trait you hate most in others?
Inability to apologize when they make mistakes.

What is the most embarrassing moment for you?
I forget the words to my songs on stage. I’m a very good mumbler of my own songs. You’d be surprised how few people notice – if you smile and do so with confidence, they won’t be the wiser.

I worry a lot about how to juggle being a single parent with work – scheduling keeps me up at night!

What would your superpower be?
I will clone myself so that I can work and be with my son at the same time.

Living in England when there are so many gray days in a row.

I would never in a million years tell you.

What is the book that you are ashamed not to read?
no one. I’m not ashamed. I have dyslexia, so I don’t read a lot of books.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
Hairstylist throughout the week and a superstar on the weekends.

What was the last lie you told?
It was about Santa Claus at Christmas time.

What is your greatest pleasure?
Fast food – Haribos, Wotsits.

What do you owe your parents?
They supported me enough but not too much, they gave me perseverance.

To whom would you like to say sorry and why?
My younger self for being so hard on myself.

What does love look like?
bliss.

What words or phrases do you overuse?
“Sorry I’m late.” I have ADHD – even if I wake up three hours early, I somehow manage to procrastinate.

What is the worst job you have ever done? finished?
I enjoyed every job, including working in my dad’s chicken shop selling potato gems (fried potato circles) to surfers.

When did you last cry? And why?
On the way here, because I’m late.

Would you rather have more sex, money or fame?
Sex.

How do you want to be remembered?
Finally nailing being on time.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Be honest with yourself.
