Nathan Aspinall won his third European Tour event of the year with a win at the German Darts Championship.

The 34-year-old Englishman beat Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode 8-6 in the final in Hildesheim.

Aspinall had never won on the European Tour before this year but added the title to victories in the European Darts Open and European Darts Cup.

An average of 97.05 points was enough to secure victory in Sunday’s final for Aspinall, who will be seeded top for the European Championship in Dortmund next weekend.

‘The Asp’ led 6-2 in the final but Van Duyvenbode equalized before Aspinall walked away to take the £30,000 first prize.

On finals day, Aspinall averaged an impressive 110 to edge out Steve Lennon, before beating Dutch duo Jermaine Watimena and Gian van Veen.

The Stockport pitcher then made four straight legs to beat world youth champion Van Veen 7-6 in the semi-finals.

Aspinall joins Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright, Luke Humphries and Dave Chisnall, becoming the fifth player to win three European Tour titles in the same calendar year.

“I’m in very good company,” said Aspinall, who will face Rob Cross in the European Championship.

“These are very difficult days. It took me 10 years to win my first title, but I have found the formula now.”

The three highest-ranked players in the world – Humphreys, Luke Littler and Van Gerwen – chose to miss the event in Germany.
