London Mavericks coach Tamsin Greenway sent out her players in a range of kits, with shorts, skirts, miniskirts, leggings and jackets all options this season for the capital team.
They are the only NSL team that goes out of its way to provide its players with such a choice of clothing in a sport where dresses have long been the norm.
Greenaway says the tradition of women’s sportswear comes from “the good old days,” which is why she welcomed news of the change.
Former England player Greenway told BBC Sport: “When I was offered this dress, I didn’t even think about it because netball is played in dresses, isn’t it? I know this dress is iconic to a lot of people.”
“But when I was a 12-year-old kid, I didn’t want to play [in a dress] -I was a total tomboy, I used to wear shorts and t-shirts and I loved the football team that wore that, I wouldn’t have enjoyed that [wearing a dress].
“You’re doing your best out there, so you want to look your best, feel your best, so why shouldn’t there be options for that, as long as everything looks like a uniform, which it does.
“Most of these teams won’t train in dresses – in what other sport do you wear clothes that are completely different than what you actually perform in?”
