LOS ANGELES – Pricing for the all-new Jeep Recon SUV will start at $65,000, the American SUV brand announced Tuesday when it officially unveiled the vehicle.

The 2026 Jeep Recon has been years in the making, with the concept of the electric vehicle inspired by the popular Wrangler SUV off-road being first unveiled in 2021. Production is expected to begin early next year at a factory in Mexico.

The Recon, which was unveiled Tuesday ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show, includes a familiar boxy Jeep design as well as removable doors, a spare tire at the rear and an opening roof — all of which are synonymous with the brand’s Wrangler SUV.

“With the Jeep Recon, we are proving that electric vehicles not only match off-road excellence, but can elevate it, delivering instant torque, precise control and a quieter, more connected driving experience that is unique to Jeep,” Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf said in a statement.

The Recon is part of Jeep’s ongoing turnaround plan, which comes after years of declining sales and after the cancellation of several Jeep SUVs for the U.S. in an effort to boost profits.

The electric car is the last of four new or updated products that Jeep promised to unveil within four months. The first three were a new Jeep Cherokee Hybrid and redesigned versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer.

“We’ve finished the SUV – four cars in four months. The Recon is the last car to do that. This will complete the story,” Bruderdorf said during a media call about the brand’s plans to launch a slew of special-edition vehicles next year.

The electric motors combine at the Recon for production 650 horsepower and 620 foot-pounds of torque – similar to some V-6 and V-8 sports cars. But that power comes at a cost, as the car has a range of up to 250 miles on a charge, which is less than many current, less expensive electric cars.

The Recon is priced about $14,000 above the entry-level 2025 Wrangler plug-in hybrid electric car and about $27,000 above the base four-door 2026 Wrangler. Pricing is in line with the Wagoneer S EV’s $65,200, and has a range of 294 miles.

The Recon comes as a Jeep Stellantis The parent company is significantly reducing its investments in electric vehicles following changing market conditions and changes to the CEO in the past year. In the broader market, electric vehicle sales declined after federal incentives of up to $7,500 to purchase an electric vehicle expired in September.

The end of federal incentives is expected to impact sales across the industry, including the Recon, but the new SUV serves as an electric vehicle “backstop” along with the Wagoneer S sport utility vehicle for the Jeep brand’s electric portfolio, Bruderdorf said.

“I’m not going to chase volume just to chase volume,” he said during the media call. “I want to sell cars the right way. Everyone wants it [battery-electric vehicle]Rickon, I want to make sure we’re there for them. After that, I don’t really care.”

The Recon is produced at the Stellantis Toluca assembly plant in Mexico alongside the Wagoneer S, Jeep Compass and new Jeep Cherokee, which is offered exclusively as a hybrid vehicle.

Bruderdorff, who began leading the brand in February, said the plant could easily adapt to produce larger quantities of Compass and Cherokee depending on demand for electric vehicles. The two gas-powered vehicles are also expected to be manufactured in the United States in the coming years for more flexibility.

“We’re going to grow and grow and grow. That’s the mission,” Bruderdorff previously told CNBC. And do it in a healthy way.”

Jeep is dealing with a spiraling decline in sales that began after the brand reached an all-time high of more than 973,000 SUVs sold in 2018. The brand’s sales have fallen 40% since then to fewer than 590,000 units last year in the United States.

Jeep sales during the third quarter of this year increased less than 0.5% compared to the previous year. Jeep’s U.S. market share has fallen from 5.4% in 2019 to 3.7% since 2024, according to Cox Automotive.
