Charlie Smith celebrated his new three-year contract, scoring 17 points in the New Orleans Saints’ 29-6 win over the New York Jets.
Former Gaelic footballer Smith has been rewarded for his game-winning kick against the Carolina Panthers with a place in the Saints’ 53-man roster, along with a new deal.
The 24-year-old had to be permanently promoted to the roster or released after being promoted from the Saints’ practice squad on three previous occasions.
Smith had his best NFL performance in Sunday’s win over the Jets as he kicked five field goals and had two more attempts.
“I want to give a lot of credit to the offense and defense today,” Smith said after the win. “We’re starting to play real complementary football here.”
“The support from everyone in New Orleans has been unreal. This team is sticking together and that’s why the wins are starting to keep coming.”
In Smith’s four AFL games to date, the Saints have won three times and he has had a successful onside kick, which has a 7% success rate, a game-winning kick and 17 points in one game.
