Newcastle United Team captain Bruno Guimaraes is expected to be out of action for two months after suffering a hamstring injury.
The Brazilian left the field in the final minutes of the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday evening in his second appearance since recovering from a separate ankle injury.
Head coach Eddie Howe said at the time that Guimarães was “a bit worried because he’s never had a hamstring problem before”.
Guimarães is now set for an extended spell on the sidelines in a huge blow for Newcastle.
Newcastle have clearly lost games Guimarães has played in before, including a 3-2 loss to Brentford last week.
However, Howe’s side have failed to win any of the 10 Premier League matches that the influential Guimaraes side have not featured in since their debut in February 2022.
In contrast, Newcastle achieved a winning percentage of 53.1 with Guimaraes in the team in the top flight.
They also earned significantly more points per game (1.8), scored more goals per game (1.9), and conceded fewer goals on average (1.2).
But Newcastle will have to find a way to win without their talisman as they embark on a tough run of fixtures, starting with Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round tie against Aston Villa.
Sandro Tonali, Joe Willock and Jacob Ramsey are the only three Newcastle midfielders available for the trip to Villa Park.
But Newcastle expect Joelinton to return soon from a thigh injury, while the club hopes Louis Mailey will not be sidelined for long with his dead leg.
