With such frequent cup clashes as well as the usual Premier League encounters – the next being at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday – it begs the question; Are their fans bored of each other? BBC Sport’s Manchester City fan writer Freddie Paye doesn’t think so.
“I feel as though there is a different feeling about games like this compared to a Premier League schedule, which makes it unique in a way,” says Freddie.
“There is also an element of surprise in these games, and with Newcastle now able to put us to a really stern test and the real threat of knocking us out of the cup competition, it usually makes for a lovely encounter.”
As for his counterpart in Newcastle, Charlotte Robson, he is not so sure. “We joked in all our group conversations that after a comprehensive win over Aston Villa, we would end up with Manchester City away in the FA Cup,” she revealed.
“It was supposed to be just a joke, not just a warning. I called my parents’ house right after the draw was announced and heard wailing in the background. Here we go again.”
Overall, this is the 17th time the two teams have met each other, meaning they still have a long way to go for the most popular cup tie in England; Arsenal vs. Liverpool, who have beaten them 27 times.
