The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott after a playoff loss to the Denver Broncos.
McDermott, 51, was the Bills’ coach for nine seasons, but despite having star quarterback Josh Allen and winning the AFC East on five occasions, he was unable to reach the Super Bowl.
Allen had a chance to clinch the victory in overtime over the weekend, but his fourth turnover in Saturday’s divisional round game allowed the Broncos to score a field goal and win 33-30.
“Sean has helped change the mentality of this organization and has been instrumental in the Bills becoming a perennial playoff team,” said owner Terry Pegula., external.
“But I feel like we need a new structure to give this organization the best chance to take our team to the next level.”
McDermott is the eighth NFL coach to leave his position this month. Buffalo is the first NFL team to win a playoff run in seven straight years but never reach the Super Bowl.
The Los Angeles Rams travel to Seattle for the NFC Championship game next Sunday, while New England will visit the Denver Broncos for an AFC title game.
The winners of Super Bowl 60 will play on Sunday, February 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
