Mike Tomlin issued a statement of his own, saying that his “respect and love for the Pittsburgh Steelers will never change.”
“This organization has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it has been an absolute honor to lead this team,” Tomlin added.
“Coaching in Pittsburgh is unlike anywhere else and I will always feel proud to be the coach of this team.
“I am excited about what the future holds for this organization and will forever be grateful for the time I spent coaching in Pittsburgh.”
Tomlin led the Steelers to their sixth Super Bowl title in 2008 and made the playoffs 13 times during his tenure.
However, their loss to Houston was their seventh straight postseason defeat, and fans expressed their dissatisfaction with his coaching during the season, chanting “Fire Tomlin” at games.
Tomlin’s departure means the Steelers will be looking for only their fourth coach since 1969.
It also marks the NFL’s ninth coaching change since the conclusion of the regular season.
