“I have the best coach in the world,” Bears quarterback Caleb Williams said of first-year coach Ben Johnson after Chicago’s impressive win over Green Bay.
After a mixed rookie campaign for Williams, the 2024 first overall pick, his second season was stellar, filled with comebacks and frenetic finishes where he made great looks feel like just another day at the office.
With Johnson called for the play and Williams executed, the Bears won six games while trailing in the final two minutes — no other team had won that many since the NFL merger in 1970.
After just five wins last year, Chicago is back in the playoffs for the first time since 2020 — and there’s no doubt that Johnson, who has been the mastermind of Detroit’s potent offense, has been key to the turnaround.
But so did Williams, an interesting character who seems to have struggled to adapt from college to the NFL — or perhaps just needed the right coach?
What makes the Bears so dangerous is their ability to battle back — Williams is in elite company as the second quarterback under 25 with six fourth-quarter comebacks in a season after Peyton Manning in 1999.
Against Green Bay, Chicago managed just three points in three quarters before Williams led them to a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter and overtime – when the going gets tough, the Bears start.
This could cause problems for opponents in the playoffs.
