The Seattle Seahawks beat the San Francisco 49ers 13-3 to secure the NFC West title and first place in the NFC, giving them a bye in the first round and home advantage throughout the playoffs.
Zach Charbonnet scored the only touchdown of the game and Jason Myers kicked two field goals for a Seahawks team whose win was built on a strong defensive performance on the road.
The win is their seventh in a row and gives them a 14-3 record.
“We’ve got our defense backed up. They’ve been like that all year. They’ve done a great job,” Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold said.
Darnold passed for 198 yards, while teammates Kenneth Walker III and Charbonnet rushed for 97 yards and 74 yards, respectively.
“It’s unbelievable. We’ve worked so hard since day one,” Walker said. “We’ve been working hard so far. But we have a lot of work to do, so we can’t get complacent.”
The team’s 49-game winning streak (12-5) in six matches ended with defeat, meaning they will be on their way to the wildcard round.
Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers kept their playoff hopes alive with a 16-14 win over the Carolina Panthers.
The Panthers, needing a win to secure their playoff spot, scored on a late Jalen Coker touchdown but the Buccaneers held on for the victory.
Both teams have 8-9 losing records and will have to wait for the outcome of the game between the already eliminated Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints to see who will make the playoffs.
A Falcons win would send Carolina into the playoffs, while a Saints victory would mean the Buccaneers advance.
