American basketball player Nikola Tobić, guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, has begun chemotherapy after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.
The 20-year-old Serbian underwent surgery on October 6 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston for a biopsy.
Sam Presti, Thunder’s general manager, said doctors have been “very positive” about Topique’s long-term health.
“The biopsy results came back and he is dealing with a case of testicular cancer,” Presti said.
“Top did not want to release this information until he started the actual treatment, which he recently started. He’s been here, training, training – through this whole process he’s been able to do this.”
“He has a tremendous group of oncologists and they are very positive about his outlook on the situation.”
Presti did not specify a timetable for when he expected Topic to return to play, adding: “Our only expectation for him is to focus on this.
“That’s his top priority. He’ll get back to playing basketball when he’s able to, but we’re not putting any length of time or expectations on that.”
“He has our full support, encouragement and love.”
Subject was the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft but suffered a serious injury to his left knee and did not play in the 2024-25 season as the Thunder won the NBA Championship.
