You’re big on pies on your Instagram. What is your favorite pastry recipe and, in short, your favorite filling – both salty and sweet? TopTramp
Well, as much as I can make it, I like to keep a small piece of shortcrust pastry or store-bought flaky pastry in the fridge. It’s much easier to roll it out and stick it on top. Pies should be double crust. The ones I make most often are small pieces of slow-cooked steak with ground beef and roasted shallots, like a ground beef and onion pie. Kids love it with chips for Saturday night dinner. I love making chicken and mushrooms with leeks, although my partner is a vegetarian, so she would probably say fish pie with poached eggs, which is a real labor of love, so I tend to save that for special occasions. I love a delicious apple cinnamon pie with a demerara sugar crust, and a cherry pie made with that really fake filling.
What happened to the live-action remake of Captain Pugwash? com.keithrickaby
That was almost 10 years ago. There was a very good script. I think the money was coming from China, and I’m not sure they’ve ever seen Captain Pugwash before. I think it was one of those things that never reached escape velocity. I remember they only had regular names, not the double names like Seaman Staines or Master Bates that everyone thinks are in anime.
Would you rather be Andy McNab Or Andy McDowell for today? pan
I would 100% want to be Andie MacDowell, not just for the chance to be Andie MacDowell, but to be a woman, just to see what it’s like. Only for one day though.
Can you still salsa and will you think carefully? ukpidgeon
I can still salsa. After Cuban Fury, I was offered to do Strictly, but when I worked out how much work it would be, compared to the fee, I said no. Plus, I was very fat, and I always had a problem with the way obese contestants on Strictly dressed. They end up looking like a satin ball, or like Violet Beauregarde in Willy Wonka, who turns into a giant berry. I have gained some other skills as an actor. I can strip the MP5 [gun] blindfolded [as he did in Spaced]. I was asked to learn to knit at my last job [as Hagrid in HBO’s Harry Potter]So I took the lessons and thought: “Yes! I can knit!”
If you see Big Lebowski Before playing Mike In spaced? PickmansModel
I didn’t see The Big Lebowski until much later, so Dude and Mike are quite similar by coincidence, even down to his glasses. I invented Mike, when I was 21, to make Simon [Pegg] He laughs. Mike was a member of the Territorial Army, and had an eye condition that meant he could not join the regular army, and had to wear glasses to correct his eye error. He just happened to be a bit of John Goodman in The Big Lebowski.
If you could remake any movie, now that they all have Hot Fuzz style country western accents, what would it be? Mr. Sobaldrick
I think it must be something very serious. Maybe falling or saving Private Ryan. I’d like to see Fall set in a small village in Somerset, although I think we’ll see Fall set in Washington, D.C. soon.
Who is the most famous person to have randomly quoted something from Cornetto? A trilogy for you? attractive
Tarantino loves Ed from Shaun of the Dead and I’m always amazed that there are pictures of me in his cinema. I was there and saw them, because it was him and Edgar [Wright] They became friends. It’s so weird – being a cinephile when you’re young, watching Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, and then suddenly the director finds your stupid face in the movie theater lobby.
Be honest – how many Harry Potter movies/books had you watched/read when you were cast as Hagrid in the upcoming TV series? version? Turanga by night2
I’ve seen all the movies. We all go through it as a family during Christmas every year. We start on December 20th and finish in a week and a half. Before I was cast as Hagrid, my partner suggested I try to show it. So, last Christmas, I watched all the Harry Potter films on Sky, while typing the word ‘Hagrid’ 7,000 times.
As someone who also started getting tattoos in my mid-30s, what motivated you to start? bearvsshark
I had one tattoo when I was 20 years old. I lost consciousness within five seconds. When I woke up, there were two Hells Angels lifting me into my chair. I didn’t have any anymore until my father died when I was forty, as a way to turn spiritual pain into physical pain, and try to push it away. I’m 53 now, and my entire upper and arms are covered. I finally got past exorcising the demons of a dead family to enjoying the pain a little. I struggled for a long time with my appearance, in terms of being too fat, and not being able to go to the beach without people laughing at you. Tattoos meant people didn’t focus on your weight, so it was like a suit of armor.
Have you ever thought about performing some of Shakespeare’s works on stage, such as Falstaff, Othello or Portia? Charismata
I’ve only done one thing on stage in my 25-year career. As much as I loved it, it was extremely stressful. My true love is film and television making. If you want me to be a Shakespearean character in a movie, yes, I will definitely do that.
Is Simon Pegg still chaining you up in his shed? Gary
Yes. I’m allowed to go out for an hour every day between 2pm and 3pm to get some exercise. [Answering.] I’m coming, Simon. He’s calling me now, so I have to go.
