“I’ll be able to play at the pinnacle of rugby, achieve everything. I want to be able to win trophies with Saracens, win trophies with England and then be able to go down as one of the greats.”

“This is my long-term goal. Short-term goal: After graduating from school, my goal has always been to be able to play in the 2027 World Cup.”

Calori faces a lot of competition. Emmanuel Feyi-Wabuso, Tommy Freeman and Tom Roebuck are ahead of him in the Borthwick pecking order, while Saracens team-mate Elliot Daly, Bath’s Henry Arundell and Harlequins’ Cadan Morley also have a place on the wing.

But Calori takes inspiration from Henry Pollock, who was named in last year’s preliminary Six Nations squad, released for the Under-20s, then returned to the senior side and scored two tries from the bench in the final round defeat of Wales.

Calori, who made two appearances for England’s second team during the autumn term, said of Pollock: “We had a few conversations in camp, which weren’t really in-depth.

“But credit to him. He’s had a crazy journey and I would definitely like to follow in his footsteps in some of the things he’s done.”

Calori says that, alongside Pollock’s pioneering example, he paid attention to the berating he received on the training ground from former England captain Owen Farrell.

Farrell returned to Saracens this season after spending a season at Racing 92 and praised Calori’s abilities, describing his teammates’ ability to recover attacking kicks as “insane”., external

However, Farrell took issue with Calori’s efforts during tackle drills earlier this season.

“It was a very cold day,” Calori recalls.

“I wasn’t necessarily gloomy, [but] I was a little cold, and I felt a little sick. It was one of those days… I could have trained harder, so there is some truth to the story.

“I was like, ‘My shoulder kind of hurts,’ just to myself.

“Vaz was like: ‘Is there something wrong with you?’ “

I said: I’m fine.

He said: Is there anything wrong with you?

I said: I’m fine.

“Train like then,” he said.

“I didn’t take it in a negative way at all. He spoke to me later in the session and said, ‘You shouldn’t need someone to motivate you to train like you always do on a day when it’s cold or on a day when you’re not picked.'”

Calori has caught the eye with 12 tries in 14 matches this season, but instead he has sharpened his defense in preparation for the Test match.

He added: “At Prem level, you might get away with a few mistakes, but at Test level, these are very small margins that you have to be able to get right – otherwise this could be the country’s game on your hands.”
