Earlier in the day, Murphy, this season’s British Open winner and Xi’an Grand Prix finalist, advanced to the third round with a 4-2 win over Elliott Slessor.

β€œEven though there were no big centuries, I was happy that when I got my chance I was able to take it,” Murphy said.

β€œI’m working towards achieving some of my personal goals, and I’m working hard between matches and between tournaments. There’s still a lot in my tank, so as long as I’m in the tournament I’ll keep batting.

β€œIt’s been a long time since I’ve played at a single table here, and this hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for me for nearly two decades, but it wasn’t for want of trying.

“I can’t wait to try and get going in the tournament. It’s one of my favorite tournaments, I love it here in Belfast, the people, the crowd, the place.”

World number 15 Gary Wilson booked a round of 16 meeting with world number one and four-time NI Open winner Judd Trump, beating Martin O’Donnell 4-2 and China’s Si Jiahui defeating Stephen Maguire 4-0.

Trump is aiming for his first title since winning the UK Championship last December and his first semi-final appearance in a rankings event this season.

Jack Lisowski, seeded 29th, beat four-time world champion Mark Seppi 4-2 and will play Thipchaya On-Noh after the Thai beat Mark Davis 4-1.

He Guoqiang prevailed 4-2 over fellow Chinese player Wu Yize, with defending champion Kyren Wilson or Ryan Day his next opponent.

Zhou Yuelong won 4-2 over David Grace to secure his place in the third round.
