📌 **What You’ll Learn**:
It is strange that the role of Northern Ireland Women’s Head Coach has been advertised at football recruitment agency Football Careers, externalindicating that the IFA currently does not have anyone to take over.
The job specification states that the ideal candidate will be based in the UK or Republic of Ireland and “will be charged with inspiring and preparing elite female players to compete on the international stage while shaping the future of women’s football”.
They must also “lead the women’s senior team into the next stage of its development and build on recent progress.”
What isn’t mentioned is the fact that due to the short lead in time for the first competitive match, the chosen candidate will be tasked with hitting the ground running.
That is easier said than done, especially in international football and with a team that had an average age of 24.8 in its previous match against Iceland last October, and whose home-grown players have not played since last year.
The national team plays qualifying matches against Switzerland, Malta and Turkey back and forth in March, April and May.
The World Cup qualifiers, which will be held in Brazil in 2027, follow the same system as the Nations League.
Only the four group winners in League A will automatically qualify for the finals, while the remaining teams must go through the playoffs for the remaining eight spots.
For NI to win a play-off, they must avoid finishing last in their group.
Switzerland reached the quarter-finals of last year’s European Championship, Malta drew with NI 0-0 at Windsor in a Euro 2025 qualifier, while Turkey are unbeaten in their last five matches.
Playing away to Switzerland first, arguably the strongest team in the group, will be a real baptism of fire for the next coach.
The new coach will be without top scorer and captain Simon Magill this season as she is expecting her first child.
They will therefore be tasked with selecting a captain for the interim period as well as quickly identifying the pool of players available and deciding who could replace Magill.
The next manager may also have to rely on the experience of Under-17 and Under-19 coach Gilles Redmond for a summary of the players and the state of the game in NI.
They will have a maximum of one week on the pitch to prepare players ahead of the match against Switzerland, so clear communication will be key and implementing major tactical ideas may have to be postponed until later.
