While that final touch remains elusive, the final straw is near.

There were no celebratory cheers at Celtic Park – and certainly not before the match – as boos echoed around the stand that are more toxic than tonic on most these days.

Before the match, large fans staged a protest, sweeping most of the Celtic fans out of the stadium. Ironically, these fans do not believe their club – and its hierarchy – operates the way Celtic should.

While the anger isn’t just directed at Nancy, its horrific start didn’t help matters. Taking a team that won seven out of eight under a caretaker manager who was a club legend and turning it into the butt of jokes will do that.

A narrow win over the 10-man side playing in Prague on Thursday – as it was deserved – will not erase the concerns some have about their credentials. It will also not hide the beginning of his term.

However, the coach stuck to his preferred 3-4-3 formation, with only one central defender – Trusty – starting between the two full-backs.

If things had gone the other way around here, the demands to stop this approach would have been deafening.

“He was under incredible pressure,” former Parkhead goalkeeper Pat Bonner told Sportsound. “He’s giving himself some time [with the result].

“It will be really interesting who he brings in next January. He just has to strengthen those defensive qualities and he might bring in a player to enhance that.

“I’m sure they have to do their homework to bring in a couple of players who can really enhance the game and this team.

“If they don’t, more questions will be asked.”
