💡 Here’s what you’ll learn:
Forrest got himself into trouble after Postecoglou’s failed experiment.
They wanted the new man ahead of the visit of Porto in the Europa League on Thursday – and Daiche must regain the organization and solidity that was so evident under Nuno Espirito Santo, who guided them to seventh in the Premier League last season.
Centre-backs Murilo and Nikola Milenkovic were unnerved by Postecoglou’s more open style, while Matz Sales, who shared the Gold Glove with Arsenal’s David Raya last season, is yet to keep a clean sheet this season and was responsible for at least one goal against Chelsea.
Elliot Anderson is the one who has maintained his form and taken the most touches, 807, in the Premier League this season – but the midfielder is an exception to the rule.
This means Daiichi will immediately need to understand the team’s makeup and psychology after Forest spent £180m on 13 new players in the summer transfer window.
Around £120m worth of talent was left out of the squad completely on Saturday – James McAtee, Dylan Pacoa, Arnaud Kalimuendo and record signing Omari Hutchinson – with only two summer signings, loanees Douglas Luiz and Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Sources close to the team feel they have too many players and too many of the same type.
The unity that was so pivotal has been disrupted by Nono’s departure and Daichi must restore that.
“He’s one of the most charismatic guys, he walks into the room and grabs the attention of the room,” said former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who played under Dyche for 18 months at Burnley.
“I always reacted well to managers, people who always had their door open and told you the truth whether you liked it or not, and that’s one of Sean’s great qualities.
“He’s a leader of men and he gets respect from the dressing room straight away. Sometimes, he gets criticized for the way he plays, but he gets results and the thing I responded to and reacted to, he’s able to get the best out of players who may not be at the top level.
“There are players in the Nottingham Forest team – Morgan Gibbs-White, Elliot Anderson, Neco Williams, Callum Hudson-Odoi – those are the kind of players who would love to play under Sean Dyche. He will be the manager they will excel under.”
Forest started the season with European ambitions again and Postecoglou were brought in to win trophies, but they will have to recalibrate to move forward again.
Dyche led Burnley to seventh place in the 2017-2018 season, making the Clarets qualify for Europe for the first time in more than 50 years.
But Everton finished 17th and 15th under him, so will the 54-year-old be able to win the Europa League?
“I think they can still do it, the squad is still there,” Robinson said. “It’s a mentality change. It’s hard to get out of a losing streak, but if anyone can do it, he’s the kind of guy who does it.”
He added: “He doesn’t want to be lumped in with the likes of Sam Allardyce, like an up-and-coming firefighter, a trouble-fixer to keep teams in the Premier League. He’s got a chance now where he can become a builder.”
He added: “He has a great team of players. Yes, there are financial constraints on them but when you look at the team, it does not need a lot of work this season.”
“It’s a great fit for him. It’s almost one of those jobs he’s been waiting for.”
