Speaking to the media after the match, both managers were reluctant to comment on the fans’ behaviour.
“As we were on our way back, I think there was some sort of scuffle; someone tried to get on the pitch,” Celtic interim coach Martin O’Neill said of the fan who argued with a member of his team.
“As you say, it may taint the procedure, but I think there’s an element of self-protection in it. So, if that’s the case, please, I’m making judgments here about things I’ve only half seen.”
He added: “The security guys, in fairness to them, wanted to keep people away. But there’s a natural euphoria about winning the game and having the fans join in. If it goes beyond that, it will be disappointing.”
Rangers coach Danny Ruhl insisted he did not see the problem.
The German said, “I was not on the field at this moment. I have not seen it yet.”
“No one likes to see this. It was a great atmosphere in 120 minutes. All the other things should not be on the field or around football.”
Speaking on Monday, Scottish First Minister John Swinney said violence had no place in football, describing it as “completely unacceptable”.
“The violence that followed yesterday’s Old Firm match at Ibrox was completely unacceptable and there is absolutely no justification for it,” he said.
“There was an extreme risk to fans, police officers and stewards. It was completely unacceptable in all respects.
“What I want to make clear is that the police have my full support in pursuing everyone involved in this incident, and we will work constructively with the clubs – who must be horrified by the scenes they witnessed – as well as to address the situation, working with the Scottish Football Association, to ensure that, collaboratively and collectively, we do everything we can to ensure that this type of incident has no place in Scottish football.”
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton also criticized the “ugly” scenes.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “When a fan comes into the stadium, they know they shouldn’t do it.”
“We understand the emotional side of the game, Celtic beat their biggest rivals at Ibrox.
“It was really ugly. It’s a shame for the game out there. It’s sad because full customization is what you want.”
“What happened today is a disgrace to the game north of the border.”
