OpenAI says Codex is coming to your phone

Codex will become mobile. The programming tool — which OpenAI launched nearly a year ago — has now been integrated into the ChatGPT app, allowing users to monitor and manage their development workflow remotely.

The new functionality allows users to see their live Codex environments in any device it runs on. The company announced the changes on Thursday; The update, which is currently in preview, is now available for all plans on iOS and Android.

“This is more than just the ability to remotely control a single task or send new tasks to your computer,” OpenAI said in a statement. “From your phone, you can work through all your threads, review outputs, approve orders, change forms, or start something new.”

Last month, OpenAI also gave Codex the ability to run in the background in desktop environments — enabling the tool to take care of different tasks independently. Earlier this month, the company also introduced a Chrome extension that allows the agent to work in live browser sessions.

In February, Anthropic released a similar feature — Remote Control — which allows users to monitor CloudCode’s work remotely.

The series of feature releases from both OpenAI and Anthropic indicate the tense competition between the two companies over whose interactive programming tool will become the most widely used. Over the past year, Anthropic’s Claude Code has gained popularity among businesses and technology professionals alike, although both tools continue to be widely used.
