LG has made a variety of improvements to this generation of panels, and it really shows in the numbers. It’s one of the brightest displays we’ve tested, with only one major competitor, the Sony Bravia 9 QLED, beating it in terms of raw brightness. This means top-level HDR performance, without some of the compromises you typically make to QLED displays to reach that brightness.

Colors are excellent too, bringing to life the deep greens and blues that some TVs may encounter. They also capture the outfits of your favorite sitcom stars as much as they do voicing explosions and meltdowns in action movies. Processing and upscaling are also top-notch, in case all your media isn’t coming from the best source.

Combine this high brightness with rich, vibrant colors, and the result is a TV that looks stunning across any type of movie. As our reviewer Ryan Waniyata said while describing the thunderstorm from the beginning mad max: fury road, “Every lightning bolt or fiery crash burns with a searing sizzle of heat, almost overwhelming my senses even when watching during the day.”

The only real issue here is the streaming interface, which is an upgraded version of LG’s WebOS operating system, which doesn’t quite match the simplicity and performance of other options like Google TV. The remote is also a bit confusing, lacking some basic functions like a mute key or enter key, both of which require other keystroke combinations. The good news here is that if it really bothers you, you can always switch to a dedicated streaming box.

If you have the money to spend, the LG G5 OLED is one of our favorite TVs, and it’s worth getting that 20 percent discount on it while you can.
