British Cameron Norrie is preparing to face world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of the Paris Masters after defeating Sebastian Baez in straight sets.

The world number 31 defeated Argentine Baez, who is 12 places behind him, with a score of 6-3, 6-4 in a match that saw his serve broken six times.

Nouri won the first three games before breaking serve at 15 to reduce the score to 3-3.

However, the 30-year-old regrouped to win the next three matches, taking a second set point.

Nouri threatened to squander his 3-0 lead again in the second set, saving a break point in the sixth game, then saving four more points in the tenth game before wrapping up the match at the first opportunity.

“My serve was very difficult. I said I would pretend it was 0-30, then 0-30, then 0-40,” Nouri told Sky Sports.

“It was about getting the job done and it was good to face some adversity. It wasn’t a typical match. He fought well.”

Norrie will meet Alcaraz, who was eliminated in the third round of last year’s tournament, on Tuesday, as the Spaniard will play his first match on the tour since his victory over Taylor Fritz in the Japan Open final at the end of September.

Alcaraz has won five of his seven meetings, most recently a straight-sets win over Norrie in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon this year.

Norrie’s compatriot Jacob Fernley will play in the first round later Monday against 12th seed Andrey Rublev.
