✅ Main takeaway:
Speaking in his post-match press conference, O’Neill said he felt Kelly made the “right decision” in joining the Tykes.
“He spoke to me in the summer and asked my opinion. I felt it was the right thing for him to leave and go to Barnsley,” he said.
“And that’s not why he’s in the team, he’s in the team because he made a real impression there.
“Connor Hourihane [Barnsley manager] He spoke glowingly about how he has adapted to their team, and they are clearly a team that wants to challenge for promotion as well.
He added: “He just has to keep playing matches, and if he continues to play well, it is clear that he is knocking on the team’s door.”
After earning his first cap, Kelly is now targeting a further appearance in the World Cup decider in Northern Ireland in March.
They will find out their opponents in Thursday’s draw, but know they will be away to the top team in the semi-finals.
“I’m looking forward to it and it will be the biggest event of my career,” Kelly added.
“So hopefully I can start now at Barnsley and have a good run of games to try and get myself into the team and hopefully we can get to the World Cup.”
