Kenyan David Munywa says there was a “crazy” reaction in his homeland after his shock win over world number 18 Mike De Decker at the PDC World Championship.

The 30-year-old works full-time as a vet and made his first trip outside of Africa to compete at Alexandra Palace.

He became the first player from Kenya to appear in the tournament and staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Belgian De Decker – who won one of the PDC’s major televised titles, the World Grand Prix, as recently as October 2024.

Munywa’s World Championship debut looked like it would end in defeat when he lost the first two sets.

However, he was able to win the next two deciding games to level the match, before an impressive 135 in the final set provided him with the platform to complete a stunning 3-2 win.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live shortly after his win, Monywa said: “It’s getting crazy in my country – everyone says we did it.” It feels great.

“Earlier in the day, most people were saying ‘This is the day, are you ready?’

“Darts is a simple game. You don’t need an acre of land to play it – all you need is a room with a board and a dart board.

“I hope it’s great [in Africa] As is the case here.”
