💡 Here’s what you’ll learn:
Kristen Stewart has claimed that acting is “unmasculine” and “inherently submissive”, and that male actors have developed “the way” to compensate.
In an interview with The New York Times, Stewart was asked about Marlon Brando’s performance in the 1978 film Superman, and after saying she had not seen the film, she said that his apparent inability to pronounce the word “Krypton” correctly was “painful.” She added: “The performance is inherently weak, and therefore very awkward and unmasculine. There is no bravado in suggesting that you are the mouthpiece of someone else’s thoughts. It is inherently submissive. Did you do that?” never Heard of an actress who was that way?
“Method acting” is a term used to describe immersive techniques derived from performance practice first outlined by Russian theater director Konstantin Stanislavsky in a series of books, beginning in 1924 with My Life in Art. This style was spread in the United States through the Group Theater of the 1930s and the Actors Studio, founded in 1947. Notable female students of the Actors Studio include Ellen Burstyn, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Melissa Leo, and Marilyn Monroe.
Stewart went on to say that “men take pride in preserving themselves” and that “if women did that, it would be different.” She added: “If you have to do 50 push-ups before a close-up or refuse to say a word a certain way… there’s a common action that happens before the acting happens on set: If [male actors] They can show off the vulnerability and feel like a gorilla is beating their chest before crying on camera, it’s a little less embarrassing. It also makes it seem like a magic trick, as if it’s impossible to do what you do and no one else can do it.
At the same time, Stewart took issue with the idea that actresses are somehow emotionally unbalanced. “The subject matter of ‘Krypton’ is very defensive,” she said, adding, “I asked one of my fellow actors, ‘Have you ever met an actress who was reckless and needed to scream and do the whole thing?’ As soon as I said “male actor, female actress”… he said, “Oh, actresses are crazy.” Then I said: Wait a minute. You just called me crazy! amazing. So now we’re doing the usual thing where the girl is crazy, and didn’t even listen to anything I said?
