Rolapp did not specifically refer to his tour’s “strategic alliance” with the DP World Tour of Europe in his opening remarks. In response to a question, the American said: “We would like to extend this.
“In fact, we made a proposal to do so, in order to create a more mutually beneficial relationship. So we hope we can do that.”
Under the current arrangement, the PGA Tour helps support the DP World Tour’s prize money. The deal is under review in 2027, but it is unclear whether the terms of the proposal to extend the relationship will remain generous.
European Tour president Guy Kennings sat in the front row for Rolab’s speech and later confirmed to BBC Sport that he would like to see the partnership continue.
Rolapp was speaking not only to reporters, but also to hundreds of PGA Tour sponsors, employees and partners. It was held in the huge lobby of the office complex titled ‘Global Home’ of the department.
The 53-year-old is one of the most respected sports executives in America. But the substance of his message struggled to match the grandeur of the occasion.
This may indicate that the “big change” is taking longer than he imagined.
But that’s the challenge of trying to satisfy so many voters, including PGA Tour members at different levels of the game, as well as longtime tournament sponsors and broadcast partners.
