Pinterest is adding controls that let you limit the amount of “AI slop” in your feed

Following backlash over an “AI slop”‘s increasing control over users’ feeds, Pinterest on Thursday added new tools that allow users to limit the amount of artificial intelligence-generated content they see on the platform.

Users can now customize their feeds to restrict generative AI images to specific categories, and the company said it will make existing GenAI content labels clearer in the coming days.

The site, which is widely used for browsing and bookmarking inspiring content and potential purchases, has come under fire from users who complained about the massive rise in GenAI content. Media outlets have also documented the issue, while publicly questioning whether AI has already ruined Pinterest or whether it can still be fixed.

If left unresolved, the issue could destroy Pinterest’s reputation and, ultimately, its bottom line.

AI slowdown will likely become more difficult as more of the web is filled with AI-generated content and the quality of AI content improves, making it less obvious to detect. Citing academic literature, Pinterest reports that GenAI content now makes up 57% of all online material.

To address this issue, Pinterest earlier this year introduced “AI-edited” labels that will appear on images whose metadata indicates AI creation, or if Pinterest’s own systems detect that the content was AI-generated. At the time, the company said it would “soon” offer consumer-facing tools that would let users choose to see less AI content.

These tools have now arrived and will be available in the app’s Settings menu, under Improve Your Recommendations.

Here, users will be able to configure whether they want to see less GenAI content in certain categories vulnerable to AI-generated images, such as beauty, art, fashion, and home decor. Pinterest said it will offer more categories in the future, based on user feedback. In addition, if users want to modify their settings, they can do so at any time.

In addition, users can submit comments about the AI’s images as they browse the site. If they see a pin that is unattractive due to the generative nature of the AI, they can click on the full three-point menu and select a category to refine their preferences.

Pinterest said the new controls will launch first on the website and Android and will be rolled out to iOS users over the coming weeks.
