City of BirminghamBirmingham City have unveiled their new 62,000 capacity stadium, the cornerstone of the city’s multi-billion pound redevelopment.
Birmingham City Center at Bordsley Green will be visible from 40 miles away and will become a “beacon of excellence in Birmingham”, Birmingham FC chairman Tom Wagner told guests at the launch on Thursday.
Twelve stacks will surround the ground which will also host various sporting and entertainment events with a retractable roof and a movable stadium.
“The stadium builds on the proud heritage of the West Midlands – a heritage of industry, creativity and growth,” Wagner said.
The distinctive chimneys reflect the brickwork that existed on the site while providing structural support for the roof, with one tower containing a lift to a bar overlooking the city.
City of BirminghamThe ‘steep bowl’ design aims to amplify the matchday experience for fans through markets, cafes, restaurants and playing areas within the ground.
The championship club, which is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding, said that its ambition is to complete the new stadium for the start of the 2030/2031 football season.
Former player Jude Bellingham and Peaky Blinders’ Arthur Shelby appeared in a film reveal of the stadium at the unveiling of Blues fan Steven Knight’s Digbeth Locke Film Studios.
The stadium will “anchor” the new sports district led by Wagner, co-founder of Knighthead Capital Management.
City of BirminghamThe club bought the 48-acre former Birmingham Wheels motorsport site at Bordesley in 2024 and said it would provide accommodation, hotels, leisure facilities and green space.
In June, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a £2.4bn investment in transport links in the West Midlands, with the Sports Park at the heart of the masterplan.
Wagner is expected to invest up to £3 billion, with thousands of jobs expected to be created through the project and further investment.
Wagner said: “This is a huge achievement for Birmingham City Football Club, creating a club home that reflects our ambition to compete at the highest level.”
“A region on the rise”
City of Birmingham“The iconic design is a statement of intent for Birmingham and the West Midlands, and is testament to an area on the rise,” Wagner went on to say.
Thomas Heatherwick, founder and design director of Heatherwick Studio which is developing the stadium, said they hoped to capture the spirit of Birmingham.
“Often, stadiums look like spaceships that could have landed anywhere, sterilizing the surrounding area. This stadium grows out of Birmingham itself – brickwork, craftsmanship, and craftsmanship at its core.
“It is also a beloved place for the community. The stadium will truly come alive when it meets the ground; a place for play, gathering and everyday life.”
