A National Basketball Association player and coach are among dozens of people charged in two investigations focusing on illegal sports betting and Mafia-linked poker games, the FBI announced.
Miami Heat player Terry Rozier was among six people arrested for alleged betting violations, including other players who may have faked bets, according to reports.
Meanwhile, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups is one of 31 people charged in a separate illegal poker case involving former players and organized crime figures.
FBI Director Kash Patel called the arrests “extraordinary” and said there was a “coordinated takedown operation across 11 states.”
The BBC has contacted the NBA for comment.
Federal investigators were investigating unusual betting activity related to a game Rozier played in March 2023 with the Charlotte Hornets, according to CBS.
Officials were investigating whether Rozier manipulated his in-game performance to benefit an illegal sports gambling scheme, according to The Athletic.
During the game, Rozier played nearly nine minutes and scored only five points against the New Orleans Pelicans due to a right foot injury.
Before that game, the average playing time was 35 minutes and about 21 points per game.
