📌 Here’s what you’ll learn:
The guest list on Chrissie Hynde’s latest album Duets Special is a testament to the high regard in which she continues to be held: Debbie Harry, Brandon Flowers, KD Lange and Dave Gahan are among the big names lined up to duet with her. On the occasion of its latest release, you’ll join us to answer your questions.
After leaving the American Midwest for London in the mid-1970s – where she worked in an NME store and Vivienne Westwood’s sex shop – she bounced between punk bands and was unable to achieve any success until forming the Pretenders in 1978.
With the No. 1 hit Brass in Pocket among their first singles, the trajectory of their career was almost vertical, and as the 1980s continued, the lineup changed but always with Hynde at the forefront, her irreverent style making her a distinct pioneer of the era. Hits mounted — “I’m Going to Sleep, 2,000 Miles” — and the band released one of the biggest pop hits of the ’90s, “I’ll Stand by You.” They ultimately released 12 studio albums, the most recent of which was 2023’s Relentless, giving them their highest chart position since the mid-1990s.
Along the way, Hynde has been a breakthrough voice in a series of collaborations: her cover of I Got You Babe with UB40 was a top hit in the UK charts, while Frank Sinatra, Cher and INXS’ Michael Hutchence were some of her other vocal partners. There are an additional 13 duets on the new album named Chrissie Hynde & Pals, with Lucinda Williams, Shirley Manson, Alan Sparhawk and Cat Power among the other names.
Hynde will answer your questions about this star-studded project and anything else in her long career. Post them in the comments below before 10am GMT on Monday 8 December, and we’ll publish their answers in the Friday 12 December issue of the Film & Music section, as well as online.
