She’s one of the icons of American alternative rock, a heroic example of someone who maintains the perfect balance when she has one foot in the mainstream and the other in the underground. After decades with Sonic Youth, Kim Gordon continues her impressive career as an individual — and she’ll answer your questions.

Born in New York and raised in Los Angeles, she returned to New York where she immersed herself in the non-wave scene in the early 1980s and met her Sonic Youth bandmates Thurston Moore – later her husband – and Lee Ranaldo, adding drummer Steve Shelley a few years later. Together they forged a new, distinct kind of rock, where noise had sculptural heft but melody and harmony wrapped around it, resulting in 15 studio albums including towering classics like Daydream Nation and Dirty.

After Gordon and Moore’s relationship ended in 2011, the band went on an indefinite hiatus. Gordon embarked on a breakthrough new noise duo with Bill Nas, Body/Head, before releasing her debut solo album No Home Record in 2019. This, along with its follow-up The Collective, demonstrated how open and innovative Gordon’s creative vision was, deftly blending musical genres from garage rock to trap and industrial. Next up is her new album Play Me, which launched with two killer singles: the up-tempo Not Today is some of the most beautiful music she’s ever made, while Dirty Tech has a beat you can imagine Travis Scott nuzzling his ear to.
