The Premier League has announced the start and end dates for the 2026-2027 season.

The first round of matches will take place on the weekend of August 22, 2026, a week later than previous seasons.

The delayed start allows players time off – a clear 89 days from the end of this season, and 33 days from the 2026 World Cup final.

The Premier League said the postponement was a “priority” for the welfare of players in an “increasingly busy global football calendar”.

The final matches of the season will be held on Sunday, May 30, 2027, with all matches kicking off at the same time as usual.

The season will end a week before the 2027 Champions League final, which will be on Saturday, June 5.

There will be 33 weekend games and five midweek games, the same as the current season.

For the festive period, the Premier League said that no two rounds of matches would be played within 60 hours.

It has not been confirmed whether there will be any matches on December 24, 2026.

However, with Boxing Day falling on Saturday, the Premier League said there would be more matches scheduled than this season, when there is only one match.
