Premier League corner chaos: How can football regulators resolve the issue?

Referees don’t go into Premier League matches without knowing each team’s tactics.

The information file is sent to officials by PGMO. It details how each team handles set pieces, both offensively and defensively.

It’s supposed to keep the referees on top in things like grappling and blocking.

But with the level of fouls so high in the Premier League, a lot of bookings are allowed.

Fans are frustrated with corner kicks being retaken, but Kahn says that’s because “the grappling often starts before the corner kick is taken.”

It is not possible to give a foul when the ball is not in play.

Maybe this could change?

“I spend my Saturday afternoon sitting next to Alan Shearer watching all the Premier League matches,” Kahn said.

“Alan’s idea, which I think has some merit, is to change the law so that once the referee blows his whistle to restart the match, the referee can then penalize any subsequent behaviour.

“You don’t have to wait until the ball is in play to award a penalty.”

Kahn has his own idea too.

“The attackers must start outside the goal area (six-yard area) before taking the corner,” Kahn explained.

“This will solve the problem of a crowded goal area and the goalkeeper being boxed in, tackled and fouled.”

However, we may have to wait a while for anything to happen.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) met in Wales on Saturday to discuss legal changes for next season.

Ian Maxwell, Chief Executive of the Scottish Football Association, responded to questions about the sport of grappling.

“It wasn’t something we specifically talked about,” Maxwell said. “Whether there is a change in that kind of behavior during games, these things happen over the course of the season.

“I’m not sure it’s necessarily getting worse.”

We must remember that we are only discussing this because players and coaches are always trying to find that extra edge to score a goal.

Perhaps there really needs to be a change to the law to stop players throwing at each other when a corner is about to be taken.

Or maybe it’s just a problem in the Premier League.
