Gerwen Price ended Michael van Gerwen’s unbeaten start to the Premier League with a 6-3 win in tonight’s second final in Antwerp.
Van Gerwen won the opening match of the season in Newcastle last week and beat Luke Littler in the semi-final on his way to another final.
But the seven-time champion was no match for Welshman Price, who overcame two playoff matches before lifting the title in more comfortable fashion.
Littler had earlier opened his first visit to Belgium in the tournament by defeating his rival Luke Humphries in the first leg.
For Price, this was a welcome victory to confirm the good form he has been in recently.
“I think I’m playing some of the best stuff I’ve ever played, but I’m not winning tournaments,” Price told Sky Sports after his win.
“There’s no way I can’t win bigger and bigger professional tours, Europeans. The averages are just for show, and if you play well at darts and win matches, you win tournaments. I’ll have some of those.”
The PDC Premier League team visited Belgium for the first time in the competition’s 21-year history, and the 10,000 darts fans inside the AFAS Dome were in for a treat.
